Frozen Pipes

If there’s one thing that the world knows about Canada, it’s that we have really, really harsh winters. With really really harsh winters comes frozen pipes. Although they seem innocent, frozen pipes can lead to absolute nightmares for the unknowing homeowner.

For water to come out effectively in your home, there has to be pressure within the pipes. Each pipe in your home is designed to withstand this pressure so everything stays in tact. In the wintertime, exposed pipes outside are put in temperatures below zero. This can cause the water within to freeze as well, and with freezing comes expansion.

This expansion can break the metal pipe, causing a crack and a pressured leak. You can imagine if this is left unchecked your home will sustain an extensive amount of water damage.

The best defense against frozen pipes is preventing them in the first place. If you follow the below steps you should be good to go come winter
  1. Keep the Heat on – Even if you’re gone for a few days during the winter, it’s always a good idea to keep the heat on for the pipes.
  2. Identify Vulnerable Freeze Spots – If you have a particular room with piping that’s away from the vents, move a space heater in there to keep the temperature up. It’s often times the rooms that we forget where a pipe can freeze and burst. Pro Tip: If you find some pipes exposed to the outside, you can insulate them with materials you can find at your local hardware store
  3. Trickle the Faucets – Leave faucets (hot and cold) to trickle when yo’re away so the water continues flowing. When water continues flowing it can’t freeze!
  4. Drain the Sprinkler System – Check your irrigation or sprinkler systems and turn them off. Don’t forget to drain them of the remaining water.
  5. Locate Water Shut Off Valve – Just in case of an emergency it’s imperative to know where your water shutoff valve is. If a pipe breaks go to the valve immediately and shut it off

I had an emergency and called many Plumbing Services but turned out to be very pricey. I came across CJ Plumbing and told them my problem and they quoted me over the phone. The same price they quoted me, is what I paid. The plumber came is Jay, he is very professional and friendly. The amount paid for the work done was very reasonable. Thank you CJ Plumbing!
